Los Angeles

An $18 cocktail holds about $4 of liquor

The other fourteen dollars pays for the building, the staff, the card processor and the government. That is worth knowing before blaming the bar, and before adding parking and two rideshares to the total.

Where the money in a bar bill goes

Cost of goods on a drink usually sits at twenty to twenty-five percent of the menu price. An eighteen-dollar cocktail holds three to four dollars of liquor, juice, ice and garnish. A nine-dollar pint holds about two dollars of beer. A thirty-dollar entree holds six to eight dollars of food. Everything else is rent, which on a walkable Los Angeles strip is the largest line after labor, plus wages, insurance, utilities, repairs, licensing, breakage, card processing at roughly three percent, and whatever the owner takes.

Then the bill grows after the bill. County sales tax on prepared food and drink runs about nine and a half percent. A twenty percent tip is the default and the terminal suggests twenty-two to twenty-five. A sixty-dollar tab for two becomes close to seventy-eight dollars paid. None of this is a swindle. It is the arithmetic of selling drinks one at a time out of expensive real estate, and it is why the markup has to be four or five times cost for the room to stay open.

The parking and rideshare line nobody budgets

This is the specifically Los Angeles part. Two rideshares to dinner across town is twenty-five to forty dollars at normal hours and considerably more after ten on a weekend or during surge. Driving swaps that for a paid lot at five to fifteen dollars in dense areas, valet where there is no lot, gas, and a hard ceiling on how much anyone drinks. Either way transport is ten to thirty percent of the evening, and it buys nothing that happens at the table.

It also pushes behavior in an expensive direction. When the trip costs thirty dollars, nobody goes out for one drink, so evenings stretch and tabs grow to justify the trip. Four short weeknight visits within walking distance cost less in total than two long cross-town nights, yet the city is built so the second pattern is the realistic one. Atwater Village is the first planned location largely because it is flat and about half a mile long.

A night out, door to door

Count a normal Friday honestly. Two cocktails each for two people at eighteen dollars is seventy-two, one shared appetizer at sixteen, tax of about eight, tip of about eighteen, and rideshares each way at thirty. That is roughly a hundred and forty-four dollars for two people, or seventy-two a head, for an evening nobody would call extravagant. Add a second venue and it clears two hundred. Menu prices account for about two-thirds of what actually leaves the bank account.

The weekday version is quieter and accumulates faster. Five lattes at seven dollars, two lunches out at twenty, four drinks between nine and eighteen, and one dinner entree at thirty comes to about $766 a month at Los Angeles market prices, before tax, before tip, before a single mile driven. That basket is not an indulgent lifestyle. It is one coffee on weekdays and going out three times a week.

The annual number

The same weekly basket at IRL member prices runs about $221 a month, or $270 with the $49 membership counted in. The difference is roughly $497 a month and about $5,959 a year. Tax and tip barely register on a tab of two-dollar beers and five-dollar lunches, and if the club is walkable the transport line goes to zero, so the real spread is wider than a straight menu comparison shows. Six thousand dollars is a down payment on something or several months of rent.

Scaled out, somebody going out three or four nights a week in this city is spending eight to ten thousand dollars a year on the going out alone, travel excluded. Most people do not know their own figure, because it arrives in forty-dollar increments that never feel like a decision at the time. Tagging three months of card statements under a single category is the cheapest diagnostic available, and it tends to be unpleasant.

What changes at a ten percent markup

IRL inverts which half of the business pays for the building. Membership is $49 a month and covers the lease and the staff. The menu then only has to cover the menu, so it runs at cost plus ten percent: two-dollar drip coffee, three-dollar lattes, four-dollar cocktails, two-dollar beer, lunch at five or six, dinner at eight. Members are asked, not required, to take one three-hour shift a month and one park cleanup day, which keeps the labor line small enough for ten percent to work.

The third input is location. A club inside walking distance of home removes the transport cost and, more to the point, removes the reason to turn every outing into a long one. Memberships open in pairs and groups rather than individually, larger referral groups move up the list faster, and every city is a waitlist until a room opens. Comparisons against the rest of the market sit on social clubs and Soho House alternatives, with the single number on pricing.

Questions

How much does a night out cost in Los Angeles?
About $72 a head for a modest evening, counted door to door. Two cocktails each at $18, a shared $16 appetizer, roughly $8 in tax and $18 in tip comes to about $114 for two, plus around $30 for rideshares each way. Menu prices account for only about two-thirds of what actually leaves the account.
What is the average price of a drink in Los Angeles?
Around $9 for a pint and $18 for a cocktail at full price in 2026, with wine by the glass sitting between them. Cost of goods inside those prices is roughly 20 to 25 percent, so an $18 cocktail contains three to four dollars of liquor, juice and ice. The rest covers rent, wages, tax, tip and card fees.
How much do people in LA spend going out each month?
A common pattern of five weekday coffees, two lunches out, four drinks and one dinner entree costs about $766 a month at market prices, before tax, tip or driving. Going out three or four nights a week generally puts someone at $8,000 to $10,000 a year on the going out itself. Most people have never added it up.
Why are bar and restaurant prices marked up so much?
Because cost of goods is only 20 to 25 percent of the menu price and everything else has to come out of the same number. Rent on a walkable strip, wages, insurance, utilities, licensing, breakage and roughly three percent in card processing all sit inside that markup. Four to five times cost is what keeps the room open.
Can a membership actually save money on going out?
It depends entirely on frequency. At $49 a month with a menu at cost plus ten percent, break-even is low: about seven market-price coffees, or four cocktails. For somebody going out several times a week, the same weekly basket falls from roughly $766 a month to about $270 including the membership fee.
