What a night out in Seattle actually costs
The liquor in a $17 Seattle cocktail costs somewhere around three or four dollars. This is where the other thirteen go, and what the gap adds up to across a year of ordinary weeks.
Inside a $17 cocktail
Start with the pour. A 1.5 ounce measure out of a mid-shelf 750ml bottle costing a bar around $30 is roughly $1.80 of spirit, and with modifiers, citrus, ice and garnish the finished drink usually lands between three and four dollars. That is a cost of goods in the twenty to twenty-five percent range, which is the standard target across the industry and not a Seattle peculiarity.
The remaining thirteen dollars is overhead. Labor commonly runs thirty to thirty-five percent of revenue in a full-service bar, and Seattle pays a minimum wage above twenty dollars an hour with no tip credit, so that share sits at the top of the national range. Occupancy takes another six to ten percent, card processing takes around three, and then there are utilities, insurance, licensing, breakage, and whatever is left over as profit, which is typically thin.

| Drinks (4 a week) | $17 | $4 | $225 |

The two charges added after the menu
Seattle sales tax is about 10.35 percent and it applies to the whole bill before the tip is calculated. A twenty percent tip on full service has become the default prompt rather than the generous option, and card screens increasingly open at twenty-two. Counter service now asks as well, so a coffee handed across a counter carries a suggested tip on a $7 transaction. Together, tax and tip add roughly thirty percent to the printed price of nearly everything consumed outside a house.
That is the part people reliably leave out when they estimate their own spending. A $17 cocktail is a $22 cocktail. A $28 entree is a $37 entree. A $19 lunch is $24. The menu price is a number used for comparison shopping on the way in, not a number that ever appears on a bank statement, and the gap between the two is where most of the monthly surprise comes from.
One ordinary Friday, itemized
Two cocktails before dinner is $34. A $28 entree with one more drink at the table is $45. That is $79 on the menu, about $87 once Seattle sales tax is applied, and about $104 after a twenty percent tip on the taxed total. Add a short ride home across the ship canal and the evening lands between $115 and $125 for one person, who has eaten a single meal and had three drinks.
Nothing in that evening is extravagant. There is no cover charge, no bottle service, no appetizer, no second entree, and no round bought for anyone else. It is what an ordinary Friday costs in Seattle in 2026 at the prices currently printed on menus. Do it twice a week, which is normal for people in their twenties and thirties here, and the annual total is larger than what most of them pay to own a car.

The weekly basket, annualized
The clearer measure is a repeated week: five weekday coffees, two lunches out, four drinks and one dinner out. At Seattle market prices, around $7 for a latte, $19 for lunch, $9 for a pint or $17 for a cocktail, and $28 for an entree, that basket costs roughly $732 a month before tax and tip. Over a year it is about $8,784, and with tax and tip it clears ten thousand dollars.
The same basket at IRL member prices is about $221 a month, or $270 with the $49 membership included. The difference is around $462 a month and about $5,543 a year. That is not a projection or a best case; it is the same list of items with a different mark-up applied, and the gap grows once tax and tip are added back to the market-price side only.
What changes at ten percent
The mark-up is the whole argument. If rent and payroll have to come out of drink prices, a cocktail cannot be four dollars no matter how well a bar is run. Move those fixed costs onto a $49 monthly membership and the drink only has to cover itself, plus ten percent, which is how you get $2 coffee, $4 cocktails, $5 to $6 lunches and $8 dinners.
Members are also asked, not required, to work one three-hour shift a month, because labor is the single largest cost being displaced. The same reasoning applied to drinks specifically is on cheap happy hour, and to food on cheap eats. The flat fee is on pricing, and how the structure holds up against other memberships here is covered under social clubs in Seattle.

Questions
- How much does a night out in Seattle cost?
- A standard Friday of three drinks and one dinner entree runs about $79 on the menu, roughly $87 with Seattle sales tax at 10.35 percent, and about $104 after a twenty percent tip. With a short ride home it lands between $115 and $125 per person, with no cover charge and nothing extravagant ordered.
- What is the average price of a drink in Seattle?
- In 2026 a pint of beer in Seattle averages around $9 and a cocktail around $17 before tax and tip. Adding the 10.35 percent sales tax and a twenty percent tip puts the real cost of that cocktail closer to $22. Happy hour windows typically bring cocktails down to $10 to $12.
- Why are drinks so expensive in Seattle bars?
- The liquor is a small part of the price. Cost of goods in a cocktail is usually twenty to twenty-five percent of the menu price, while labor takes thirty to thirty-five percent of revenue, rent takes six to ten, and card fees take around three. Washington also has the highest spirits taxes in the country, which raises the wholesale cost before anything is poured.
- How much do people spend going out in Seattle each month?
- A week of five weekday coffees, two lunches out, four drinks and one dinner out costs about $732 a month at Seattle market prices, before tax and tip. That is roughly $8,784 a year, and over ten thousand once tax and a twenty percent tip are included.
- How much would an IRL membership save?
- The same weekly basket at IRL member prices costs about $221 a month, or $270 including the $49 membership, against roughly $732 at market prices. That is about $462 a month, or around $5,543 a year, and the gap widens further because tax and tip apply to the market-price side.
